Mathematical modelling of flow in disc friction LVAD pump

Reporter: Medvedev A.E.

Disc friction pumps in contrast to vane pumps have a number of characteristics (especially small thrombogenicity) which allow them to be used as implantable pumps of ancillary circulation.  Auxiliary circulation pumps are implantable left ventricular assist device (LVAD) used to treat terminal cardiac insufficiency.
Analytical numerical and experimental disk pumps supporting blood circulation were carried out.  A comprehensive approach made it possible to determine the optimum characteristics of a pump that meets the medical requirements for the characteristics of an implant pump.  The pump of auxiliary blood circulation meets the following requirements blood flow from 3 to 7 l / min;  The shear stress tensor does not exceed 240 Pa;  Differential pressure in the operating mode of 100-110 mm Hg.  Art.  The calculations showed that the disk pump with the following parameters of the internal radius of the discs of 6 mm the outer radius of the discs of 20 mm the gap between the discs of 0.25 mm and the speed of rotation of the rotor rev / min ensures the performance of the above parameters with a hydraulic efficiency of up to 45%.
The characteristics of the pump are calculated flow rates pressure drop stress tensor and hydraulic efficiency of the pump.  A local minimum pressure in the pump is detected which leads to a local "blocking" of the flow and a reduction in the pressure characteristics and efficiency of the pump.  Parameters that cause a local "blocking" of the flow are found and ways of overcoming this phenomenon are indicated.  The optimal internal radius of the disk is established at which the maximum pressure drop and the efficiency of the disk pump are achieved which allowed to calculate optimum parameters of the disk package of the pump.
The carried out calculated and experimental studies confirm the perspectivity of using the developed pump to support blood circulation in the human body.
