Numerical research of influence of laser radiation parameters on the formation of Intermetallic phases from metal powders in selective laser melting technology

Reporter: Agapovichev A.V.

The high-strength steels, titanium alloys and nickel-base alloys are the main materials currently used for manufacture of gas turbine engines. Other materials are applied considerably to a lesser extent. It is necessary to distinguish from future materials the intermetallic alloys, including based on nickel and aluminum, the use of which will allow solving a number of problems in aircraft industry, rocket production and in other hi-tech fields of technique. From nickel aluminides, the intermetallides  Ni3Al and NiAl are interesting in a large extent as refractory materials with relatively low density and enough high characteristics in thermal stability and heat resistance.
The restricted number of the possible ways of production is constraint for wide spread occurrence of aluminides applicable for the creation of details from these materials that strongly affects the production cost. One of way of depreciation of production consists in the application of new economic, pollution-free, resource-saving productions technology, such as selective laser melting (SLM).
Mathematical modeling allows carrying out the correct choice of parameters of laser processing. However the modeling of the process selective laser melting of metallic powders accompanying intermetallic phase’s formation presents serious difficulties. The main problems connect with the different scale of physical and chemical processes, their interrelation, the absence of reliable experimental data on the dependences of the properties on the composition, structure, and etc.
In this paper, an attempt is made to take into account the actual physical and chemical processes going during the selective laser melting of the intermetallic powder material VKNA-1VR.
The sources and sinks of the heat are absent on the plate borders. Mathematical formulation of the problem on the intermetallic phases formation in the course of SLM includes the heat conduction equation and system of the kinetic equations for the reagents and products of thermodynamically possible reactions. The problem is solved numerically.
The temperature and composition distributions in the system "powder layer -construction platform" are obtained for various points of time. The conditions favored to the phase composition change are found.
